Lady Jags Advance

In Day One action at the Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament, the Lady Jaguars set the tone for a good postseason with a 10-2 victory over sixth-seeded ULM that was called after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule. The opening win came on the heels of some good news for certain members of the team and their coach.

USA's Becky Clark was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year before the tournament began and pitcher Hannah Campbell was named the Freshman of the Year. Campbell, outfielders Brittany Fowler and Haley Hopkins, and second base stalwart Haley Richards were all named second team all-conference as well.

Hopkins obviously enjoyed the accolades as she celebrated by going 2 for 3 in the game against ULM with four RBI. Campbell allowed only four hits in the five innings and struck out five. Catcher Katy Neal must have decided she will try and go for an all-tournament selection as she belted a three-run homer to help put the game out of reach.

USA will next face second-seeded FAU, who squeaked out a win over seventh-seeded WKU 4-3. That game will be played Thursday at 3pm. The loser of that game will take on the winner of ULM-WKU in Game 10 at 12:30pm on Friday. The winner of Game 10 then faces the winner of the USA/FAU game for the right to play for the championship.

On the other side of the bracket, five-seeded Troy beat four-seeded FIU 4-0 and now will face top-seeded ULL who defeated MTSU 10-3. They will square off at 5:30pm on Thursday. FIU and MTSU will play Thursday at 12:30pm in an elimination game.

The Lady Jags seem like the best bet to represent USA in the postseason this year. The next few days will determine if that comes to pass. JagsJungle.com will keep you updated as the games unfold.
