Jags in Paradise

In 2012 South Alabama Football will be FBS in every way except for one important one: It will be their final year of no postseason eligibility as they complete their transition to football's top level. To compensate the players for their hard work, though, a great end of the year trip has been arranged.

On December 1st, 2012, the Jags will be the guest of the Hawaii Warriors in our 50th state. Coincidentally enough, this announcement comes a day after word was out that the USA basketball team may also be visiting Hawaii. The initial news was that it would not be near the same date, but perhaps some juggling could be done to make it a JagaPalooza in the Pacific for our traveling fans.

In addition to being a great reward and recruiting tool for the program until bowl opportunities present themselves in 2013, the game also provides USA with a chance to schedule a 13th game as matchups that don't take place in the continental United States do not count against the NCAA's 12 game limit. The Jags could use that extra game to either get another high-paying road game against and FBS team or get a less-challenging opponent to help develop the team and build depth. Hawaii will be paying South Alabama's team expenses but little, if any, beyond that.

Road games in Hawaii have been used in this way before by other programs and it is usually been successful in it's goal of exciting players and energizing alumni. The early indications are that it has done that for USA.
