Lady Jags Face Uphill Climb

The second day of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament looked decidedly different than the first as far as the Lady Jaguars were concerned. An easy 10-2 win over ULM in the first game was quickly forgotten in a 3-1 loss to FAU in the second.

The Ladies did off to a good start as they scored a run in the second inning, but FAU answered with one of their own in the next inning and then two more in the fourth. FAU pitcher Rose Gressley threw seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and the one earned run.

The Jags scored their run when Carolina Mendoza singled and then scored on Katy Neal's double and the subsequent throwing error on FAU's Heather Barnes at second base.

Morgan Druhan pitched well in the first two innings but then ran into trouble. After hitting Brittany Walker with a pitch, Druhan sandwiched a popout and a strikeout around a single and walk to load the bases with two outs. Another walk led to the first FAU run and the end of Druhan's day. Hannah Campbell came in to end the inning but had her own problems in the fourth when a walk, two singles and fielder's choice led to two more FAU runs and the final margin.

Unusually, with the loss USA will now be in the loser's bracket on the other side of the tournament, where SBC champion ULL lurks. The Jags will now face FIU, who lost to Troy 4-0 in their opening game and eliminated MTSU 11-4 in their second. The loser of the game will go home and the winner will take on the winner of the ULL/Troy game. Should South Alabama get to this point, they would have to defeat ULL or Troy a second time to advance to the championship game.

There is no longer a margin of error for Becky Clark's Lady Jags. It will be do or die from this point on.
