Season Ends For Lady Jags

Trying to advance through the loser's bracket, USA did well in their first test of the day, a 4-2 win over FIU that sent the Golden Panthers home. However, the day's second game against top-seeded host team ULL Ragin' Cajuns went horribly wrong.

Strong defense, timely hitting and crafty pitching by Hannah Campbell, who allowed two runs by scattering nine hits over seven innings, gave USA the victory over FIU. Unfortunately these things were not in evidence in their matchup against ULL. The Cajuns not only put up 10 runs on the Lady Jags, but their star pitcher Ashley Brignac threw a no-hitter as her team advanced to the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Still, it was a notable season for USA. They ended up with a 37-17 record, the most wins in the program's five-year history. An early season 15 game winning streak was a huge contributor to that record as well as the third-place finish in the SBC. Coach Becky Clark was named the conference Coach of the Year and Campbell the Freshman of the Year.

Despite the earlier-than-hoped-for exit from the tournament, the future looks very bright for USA. They lose only two seniors and of those only shortstop Jenny Stephens was a starter. A promising recruiting class added to a veteran roster and 2012 may turn out to be the year of the Jaguar.
