Jags Add Shortstop

Shortstop was a problem area for the Jags last season, although they did manage to stabilize the position down the stretch. To avoid that issue in the future, Trey Cockrell has signed his letter of intent to play baseball for the University of South Alabama.

This spring Cockrell was the starting shortstop as a true freshman at Pensacola Junior College. Smooth in the field with soft hands, he made good on 182 of 190 chances for a .958 fielding percentage. He also turned 20 double plays. At the plate he chipped in with a .286 average with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 18 RBI, 21 runs, a .343 on-base percentage and 5 stolen bases.

Cockrell is a native Mobilian who prepped at Cottage Hill Christian Academy, played for the Mobile Rawdogs and is returning home after just one year at Pensacola Junior College with four years to play three. It is expected that he will challenge for a starting job at USA this upcoming spring.
