WBB Recap: Vols Dominate Gamecocks

The Tennessee Lady Vols continued their 2010-11 dominance of the SEC with an 82-60 victory over South Carolina in Thompson-Boling Arena. The Lady Vols clinched at least a share of the SEC Title and can win it outright with a victory over Georgia Monday. The Vols are still perfect in SEC play and have now won 16 straight. For the Gamecocks, it snapped three-game winning streak.

It was a case of Déjà vu for the South Carolina women's basketball team against the Tennessee Lady Vols Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. Go toe-to-toe for nearly the entire first half before the Vols pulled away at the end of the half.

The Gamecocks pulled to within 31-26 with two minutes left in the first half before Tennessee closed on a 9-3 run to take a 40-29 lead into the locker room. From there the Vols quickly pulled away and cruised to the victory.

Tennessee used its superior size to dominate the glass, out-rebounding Carolina 51-30, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

Ieasia Walker scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half to lead the Gamecock offense. Valerie Nainima finished with 15 points and was 4-for-8 from three-point range.

Alicia Manning scored a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers, going 8-of-11 from the field. Meighan Simmons scored 17 and Shekinna Stricklen finished with another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Carolina returns to action Sunday, hosting Auburn at the Colonial Life Arena. The Tigers, who suffered a disappointing loss to arch-rival Alabama, defeated the Gamecocks in the first meeting, a 54-47 win on the Plains.
