South Carolina holds on to beat Florida

South Carolina, kept its hopes of a second straight SEC East title alive, beat Florida 17-12 Saturday in Columbia, S.C.

The Gamecocks, who trail first-place Georgia by a half-game in the SEC East standings, can win the division title and berth in the SEC Championship Game if Georgia loses to Auburn today.

South Carolina (8-2, 6-2) led 14-3 at halftime on two touchdown runs by quarterback Connor Shaw, but the Gators closed the gap in the second half.

After Caleb Sturgis kicked a 24-yard field goal for Florida (5-4, 3-4) in the third quarter, the Gators closed to 14-12 on freshman Jacoby Brissett's 2-yard TD run. But the Gators' two-point conversion pass was intercepted.

South Carolina extended the lead to 17-12 on a 27-yard field goal by Jay Wooten, and the Gamecocks kept the ball away from the Gators for most of the rest of the fourth quarter.
