Efficiency Ratings: Western Carolina

As the team goes through the season, we'll track its efficiency game by game to give the fans a more in-depth look at production. On Friday, South Carolina opened up the season with a 75-50 win over Western Carolina, but as far as efficiency goes, the Gamecocks were led by a man who made just two buckets. Check it out to see who he was.

A quick way NBA coaches measure a player's game performance is by evaluating his efficiency. In order to find a player's efficiency the following formula is used:

((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).

For example, compare the following stat lines:

Player A: 17 points (5-of-22 FG, 7-9 FT), 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers.

Player B: 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 turnovers

Who had the better game? Using the NBA formula player B, who hit five of eight shots and committed two turnovers registered a +20 efficiency total while Player A who missed 17 shots and had four turnovers had just a +11 rating.

For reference, two seasons ago LeBron James posted the two most efficient games of the season with a +54 (37 points on 11-of-17 FG & 9-10 FT, 12 rebounds, 11 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, and 2 turnovers) and +50 (40 points on 16-of-23 FG & 6-6 FT, 8 rebounds, 8 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers) rating.

Friday's Game:

-Lakeem Jackson 21
-Anthony Gill 16
-Brenton Williams 14
-R.J. Slawson 10
-Carlton Geathers 9
-Malik Cooke 8
-Eric Smith 8
-Brian Richardson 7
-Damontre Harris 1
-Damien Leonard -1

Team Rating: 93

Notes: It's not often that you make just two shots and lead the team in efficiency... Enter Lakeem Jackson. Jackson had 10 rebounds with five assists and no turnovers. That's production. ... Freshman Anyhony Gill led the team in scoring and was No. 2 rating for the Gamecocks. If he would've went for a double-double, he would've been No. 1. Gill is now 11 of 14 shooting in his first two games of action (exhibition and season opener). ... Brenton Williams, making his South Carolina debut like Gill, was No. 3. His five steals and 5 of 8 shooting helped that. ... In South Carolina's chase to find its identity, the least amount of minutes any scholarship player had was 16 (Carlton Geathers). A freshman (Gill) and the lone senior (Cooke) had the most minutes at 23 apiece. ... As a team, South Carolina shot 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from 3 and 30-of-59 (50.8).
