Efficiency Rating: TSU

As the team goes through the season, we'll track its efficiency game by game to give the fans a more in-depth look at production. On Sunday, South Carolina dropped its second straight game, but one man's breakout night put some positivity in the Gamecocks' corner. Check in to see how it rated in the efficiency rating.

A quick way NBA coaches measure a player's game performance is by evaluating his efficiency. In order to find a player's efficiency the following formula is used:

((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).

For example, compare the following stat lines:

Player A: 17 points (5-of-22 FG, 7-9 FT), 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers.

Player B: 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 turnovers

Who had the better game? Using the NBA formula player B, who hit five of eight shots and committed two turnovers registered a +20 efficiency total while Player A who missed 17 shots and had four turnovers had just a +11 rating.

For reference, two seasons ago LeBron James posted the two most efficient games of the season with a +54 (37 points on 11-of-17 FG & 9-10 FT, 12 rebounds, 11 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, and 2 turnovers) and +50 (40 points on 16-of-23 FG & 6-6 FT, 8 rebounds, 8 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers) rating.

Sunday's Game:

-Lakeem Jackson 10
-R.J. Slawson 10

Notes: Eric Smith had a breakout game from 3, finishing 5-of-7, but the rest of team went 2-of-19. ... Despite Smith being so prolific from 3, it was Damontre Harris and his two field-goal attempts that were the most efficient. It helped that Harris didn't miss on either of his attempts from the floor and hit his lone free throw. ... South Carolina turned the ball over quite a bit with 16 turnovers to 13 assists. ... The stats for both teams were rather similar, but the biggest difference was Tennessee State going 10-of-22 (46 percent) from 3, compared to 7-of-26 (27 percent) for the Gamecocks. Even though Anthony Gill (1-of-3) only scored two points, he still hasn't missed more than two shots in a game. ... in both losses this season, South Carolina's highest rating from a player has been 14.
