One of the top free safety prospects in Louisiana is receiving major attention from South Carolina, Louisiana State, Miami, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma State, Colorado, and Mississippi. The 6'2, 190-pounder runs the forty-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He already has an offer from the Gamecocks.

Jonathan Byrd of Saint Helena Central in Greensburg (La.) is a hard-hitting free safety prospect. He makes big plays at the right time. He flows to the ball well and can turn on the jets in case he needs to run someone down. He had 27 tackles and 14 interceptions. (He had 12 interceptions as a sophomore.) Byrd's terrific 2002 season earned him All-State, All-District, and All-Metro honors. He expects to be a full qualifier with a 3.2 grade point average. Byrd plans to take the SAT in June.

Byrd should have plenty of offers by summer, but will he need another offer?

"I would like to go to South Carolina to play with my (First) cousin. (Stanley Doughty) He makes it sound like a paradise. Even my recruiter (Dave Roberts) told me that he wanted me to come play with my cousin," Boyd said.

Byrd will make a decision after his visits. He hasn't made any definite plans in which summer football camps he will attend but mentioned that he's going to try to make it to the South Carolina camp.
