Gamecocks take series

The Gamecocks squeaked out another one-run victory over VMI on Saturday afternoon defeating the Keydets 3-2 in the second game of the weekend series and first game of a Saturday doubleheader that was forced due to the threat of rain Sunday.

Matt Price made just his second career start and didn't give up a single hit, but the story of his outing was control. He walked three and hit three and was pulled in the sixth with no outs after allowing a run to score on a wild pitch. Price threw 89 pitches and rung up twelve strikeouts.

Ethan Carter relieved Price and inherited a sticky situation with runners on second and third with no out. Carter allowed just one run to score on a base hit to left. Left fielder Tanner English came up firing and nailed the second runner in a close play at the plate.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth it was a 2-2 game, but it would take just moments for South Carolina to regain the lead.

Catcher Dante Rosenburg doubled off the top of the wall and brought in Joey Pankake. The one run cushion was all the Gamecocks would need, as Ethan Carter finished off the last three innings and earned a win, striking out six and surrendering just two hits.

Game two of the doubleheader and game three of the series will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game with Colby Holmes on the mound for the Gamecocks.

Gamecock Anthem will have a full recap with quotes following that game as there was no press conference following the first contest.
