South Carolina hit the field at Williams-Brice Saturday morning to get in some scrimmage time. The bulk of the day was spent on overtime situations.
After practice, Coach Spurrier wasn't as enthusiastic as he's been in recent days with his team's performance.
"It was a lackluster type scrimmage with the receivers and tight ends dropping a bunch of passes and with the offensive linemen jumping offsides. It was pretty ugly on the offensive side. The defensive guys made some plays on some tipped balls. The receivers couldn't catch it, so it goes off their hands and some of the DB's made some nice plays today."
Marcus Lattimore and Kenny Miles had limited carries in the scrimmage. The focus was more on getting the younger players some scrimmage time. Coach Spurrier mentioned Brendan Nosovitch as someone who got in there and made a few throws.
One defensive player mentioned by Coach Spurrier this afternoon was freshman Jordan Diggs. Spurrier said he had a nice pick on coverage of the tight end. Jessie Dukes also got mentioned by Coach Spurrier with his two picks today off of tipped balls from the receivers.
A few Gamecocks are currently nursing some injuries. Coach Lorenzo Ward said that Akeem Auguste played the first series but re-aggravated his groin injury and came out. Defensive lineman Phillip Dukes also suffered an injury believed to be a groin injury. Ward did say he was fine. The Gamecocks just held him out today.
The injury to Akeem Auguste means Jimmy Legree and Ahmad Christian will need to step up. Coach Ward said that if the Gamecocks had to play tomorrow, Jimmy Legree would be the starting cornerback in place of Auguste. Christian should return to practice on Sunday.
When asked about the depth of the defensive tackles, Coach Ward said that Gerald Dixon Jr. has done well and Phillip Dukes will be ready to play. He believes the Gamecocks can survive with four defensive tackles and go from there.
Coach Ward seemed confident that his defense will be ready to play against Vanderbilt.
"We made some plays, but we gave up some plays. We'll continue to get better. I'm not upset about where we are. We've got 12 or 13 days before we play. I think we'll be ready."
The running back depth chart is starting to solidify itself with Marcus Lattimore as the starter with Kenny Miles as the backup. Freshman Mike Davis is currently battling for a spot on the chart but says it's up to the coaches on whether or not he plays this season or redshirts.
"I just want to sit behind those guys and learn. Anything I can do to help the team."
Davis' brother, James (former Clemson running back) told Davis that, "he has to work hard. Do everything that the coaches tell you."
Davis says the speed of the game shows him that things you could do in high school, can't be done in college. He also said there hasn't been much interaction with Clowney in practice. Davis called Clowney a "freakish athlete."
South Carolina will return to the practice fields on Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. non-contact practice. All practices are closed to the public.
