The Follow-Up Interview We Promised

We broke the story to our premium subscribers late Sunday. But we promised you more from this future Gamecock, and here it is ...

Jamon Meredith of Hillcrest (SC) is one of the top jumbo athletes in the state of South Carolina. He recently pulled the trigger on a commitment to the Gamecocks. caught up with Meredith to talk about what made him decide so soon.

"I was sure about a week before I committed. My parents have supported me a 100-percent. I just wanted to go ahead and make a decision early so I could concentrate on this season without having ‘decisions to make' hanging over my head. I've always wanted to play for them ever since I saw the big recruiting class this past year. I think after talking to my friend Ryan McKie, I was definitely sure. He asked me if I got hurt the first day of practice and couldn't play football anymore, where would I want to spend five years without football, and the answer is definitely Columbia."

Why was South Carolina the best choice for Meredith?

"(Coach Guge) He really didn't have to sell the university to me, I already knew all the good things about USC. They offer civil engineering, and that is what I want to major in."

So how does Meredith feel about having an opportunity for early playing time?

"I will probably be red-shirted so after my red-shirt year, I think I can compete at defensive end for them especially with the senior defensive linemen leaving."

When will Meredith take a visit to South Carolina and will he visit elsewhere?

"I probably will visit (USC) as early as this weekend. If I visit any other schools, it will probably be Clemson or Maryland."

Is his commitment firm or soft?

"I am very happy with my decision. I doubt anything would change my mind, even if USC went 0-12, which I doubt, I still would want to play for the Gamecocks."

As always will keep you updated on Jamon Meredith's status all the way until Signing Day.
