Thursday practice report

The South Carolina football team practiced twice on Thursday as they continued preparations for their January 1 matchup with Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

The Gamecock football team had two practices on Thursday.

South Carolina's first practice was held at the Bluff Road practice fields Thursday morning and lasted nearly two hours.

The team's second practice was held in the afternoon inside Williams-Brice Stadium, but was cut short due to rain.

The team moved indoors for meetings.

South Carolina back-up quarterback Dylan Thompson spoke to the media Thursday.

"We're getting ready for the game, going through our stuff and getting the game plan down. It definitely gets you a little more amped up for it. Honestly, I felt we're in great hands with Connor and great hands with myself, so however that works out Coach will make the right decision and we'll roll with that," said Thompson.

On Wednesday, Steve Spurrier named Connor Shaw as the starting quarterback for the bowl game.

He said Thompson will see some playing time.

"It's my job to work as hard as I can and be ready when my number's called, just like every other second guy on the depth chart. Whatever opportunity I get is what I roll with," Thompson said.

Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus also addressed the media Thursday.

"Connor is getting as healthy as he's been in a while. He's looked good. (The quarterbacks) had good tempo and good enthusiasm about them. (Connor) has had a pretty good stretch of staying off (his injured foot), hopefully that will pay off. Connor's been the starter. He's earned it. It's nice to have a couple guys who can go in there and play. That hadn't been the case necessarily over the last few years. Both will play (against Michigan)," said Mangus.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning.

The team will break for the Christmas holidays after Saturday's practice and fly to to Tampa on December 26.

Bowl week practices begin on December 27.
