COLUMBIA, S.C. (South Carolina SID) – Sophomore left-hander Jack Wynkoop pitched eight scoreless innings with just four hits allowed and combined with Taylor Widener for a six-hit shutout as top ranked South Carolina defeated Brown 8-0 to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks recorded a pair of shutouts in the doubleheader with a 13-0 win in the first game. South Carolina is now 14-0 on the year with Brown 0-2 for the season. The series concludes on Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 12:30 p.m. Live video broadcast is available at GamecocksOnline with the game also available on the Gamecock IMG Radio Network including flagship station, 107.5 FM, "The Game."
Wynkoop did not walk a batter and struck out five in the contest. He tied his career-high for innings pitched as he also had eight last season in a win vs. Kentucky. Wynkoop with the win improves to 4-0 on the year. Widener struck out three batters in a scoreless ninth inning. Brown starter Dave St. Lawrence suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the year. He allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with five walks and a strikeout in seven innings pitched.
Scoreless through three innings, South Carolina scored four runs in the middle innings. DC Arendas broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run, his second homer of the season for the Gamecocks. Carolina increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning on a two-run triple by Marcus Mooney. After Grayson Greiner led off the frame with a single and Tanner English drew a two-out walk, Mooney roped his first career triple in a Gamecock uniform on a 1-1 pitch to score both runners. The lead extended to 4-0 in the sixth as Joey Pankake led off with a double and scored on Connor Bright's one-out sacrifice fly to right field.
The Gamecocks batted around in the bottom of the eighth to break ahead 8-0. A pair of two-out singles off the bat of Tanner English and Marcus Mooney scored four runs. Mooney went 2-for-5 with a season-high four RBI. English scored two runs as did Grayson Greiner, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Arendas finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI also.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played," said South Carolina head coach Chad Holbrook. We had two very clean, well-pitched and defended games, 18 innings with no errors. I thought Jordan (Montgomery) and Jack (Wynkoop) were terrific. Jack got in a rhythm there from the third inning until the eighth. I thought it was about as good as he's thrown since he's been here. It was fun to sit over there and watch him. I though Jordan was a lot better with his command than he was last Friday against Clemson. He made some really good pitches and we wanted to limit him around 80 pitches because we are ahead a day because of the rainout yesterday. We weren't going to stretch him out any, if we could afford to. I feel good about that. I feel really good about seeing Reed (Scott), Matt (Vogel), John (Parke), and Taylor (Widener) throw the ball really well too. That's four freshmen that have a bright future in our program and they've given our bullpen some depth. All and all it was a good day for us. We swung the bats well, for the most part. We had 18 hits in game one and 27 hits on the day. That's not too bad. It was a good day for the Gamecocks and we look forward to the short turnaround and playing again tomorrow."
South Carolina has seven shutout victories in 14 wins on the year.
