The Gamecocks have less than two months until kick-off against Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium, and fans are gearing up for a big season ahead.
Head coach Steve Spurrier started off his first season with the University of South Carolina in 2005 and led the garnet and black to a 7-5 record and second place in the SEC's Eastern Division. He stands as the most winningest coach at Carolina with 77-victories.
Last season, 2013 brought the Gamecocks their third consecutive year of 11-wins in a season and bowl victory.
However, all the season records and big bowl wins cannot compare to the trophy set for 2014. James Butler Bonham is his name, and he is known to be a very dear part to South Carolina and Texas State history.
Bonham was a South Carolina-born hero in the Battle of the Alamo. The Gamecock practiced law in the Palmetto State before moving to Texas. Now, he serves as an SEC rivalry trophy. Big rivalries like Auburn vs. Alabama or Ole Miss vs. Vanderbilt each have something to quarrel over on the field.
Introducing the two universities that are over 1,000-miles away from each other, there had to be some kind of wager to the contest besides a "W".
And, why not create history with history?
