COLUMBIA, SC--The SEC Media Days have spoken, and the Gamecocks are picked to win the 2014 Eastern Division title.
With an all-time high of 293 voters for the epic football media-extravaganza, the University of South Carolina received 1,895 points to outdistance Georgia (1,777) for the top spot in the East. Florida (1,362) and Missouri (1,263) were picked third and fourth respectively, while Tennessee (893), Vanderbilt (619) and Kentucky (395) round out the Eastern Division.
Running back Mike Davis and senior offensive lineman A.J. Cann and Corey Robinson all were named to the preseason All-SEC second team unit. Senior safety Brison Williams was named to the third-team squad.
Having the most first-team selections, the Crimson Tide was favored to win the Western Division, bringing in 1,915 points. Auburn followed shortly behind with 1,735, and the rest of the West rounded off as LSU (1,453), Ole Miss (1.069), Mississippi State (890), Texas A&M (791) and Arkansas (351).
Alabama rolled in with 154 votes to take the SEC title. Defending champs, Auburn only landed in with 75, South Carolina ranked next with 32, and Georgia came in at 19. LSU (9), Ole Miss (2), Arkansas (1), and Mississippi State (1) followed shortly behind.
Nick Saban commented at the end of his press conference to the media this afternoon on the recent news stating,”Every year that we have been fortunate enough to win the championship, you pick somebody else to win it, so just to let you know that we’re evaluating you.”
Needless to say, the statement created a roar of laughter in the room.
