Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln High School wide receiver John Burt committed to Texas this afternoon. The 6-foot-4 and 190-pound rising senior picked the Longhorns after also considering offers from Auburn, Florida State and Miami. Burt’s high school head coach, Yusef Shakir, has had his fair share of talented players move onto play major college football and believes his ultra-talented pupil has improved this summer. He also thinks Burt has the ability and potential to make an immediate impact upon his arrival at Texas.
”John has had a great summer so far. He has gotten bigger and stronger in the weight room,” began Coach Shakir.
Burt has competed in two high profile camps this summer and his coach says it has made him a better player heading into his senior year.
”He went to the Rivals camp and The Opening and those were great opportunities for him and helped him improve and get better. I think it showed that he was able to play against top-notch competition and he can compete against those guys. He is such a special athlete, we have kids that can compete with him at Lincoln, luckily, but it is always good to get in those type of situations where every single rep you’re going against the best people,” Coach Shakir said.
The state championship winning head coach says Burt has continued to mature physically and mentally this summer.
”John has improved his route-running. He is getting older, he is focused on the details, and he has matured. He is really improving his attention to detail on the small things and that is what you expect of a senior,” Coach Shakir said.
His coach believes Burt’s best football is still ahead of him and can compete for early playing time.
”The thing about John is he is going to be a 220-pound kid. He is about 190-pounds and still looks skinny, so he is going to develop and get bigger. He is a very broad shouldered kid that can develop and continue to grow. We already know he is a big kid that can run, that is athletic, that can do a lot of things that smaller kids can do. I really think the sky is the limit for him as far as his development is concerned and the level he is going to play at in college. I think he is going to be a great addition to Texas. They are used to having great players and great athletes. I think John will fit right in and go in and help where he can. He is a very humble kid, an all-around great kid that just wants to go in and do his best. I think he is going to go in there and do just fine,” finished Coach Shakir.
