Heard Dominating Walk-On Roll

University of South Carolina walk-on Carlton Heard from Athens,Ga. was noted by the Old Ball Coach as a leader this upcoming season.

Carlton Heard, in the summer graded out right there with Dylan (Thompson), A.J. Cann and all those guys. He had an excellent summer, did everything coaches asked, plus a little bit more,” head coach Steve Spurrier said to the media on Sunday when asked about a front-running walk-on candidate for a scholarship.

The walk-on wide receiver joined the team for the first time in the spring of 2013 and is noted as a front-runner at the moment. 6-foot, 188 pounds, Heard is on the second team entering the fall.

In 2012, Heard played eight games at Gardner-Webb, caught 31 passes for 422 yards, averaging 13.6 per catch, with one touchdown.

Since he was with the Bulldogs, the Peach State-native was not eligible last fall per NCAA.

Sharing the wide receiver position, fellow teammate and walk-on junior Kane Whitehurst stands at the third-team unit, behind Heard, coming into 2014. The Duluth, Ga.-native was a transfer from Arkansas in 2012 and became eligible in 2013.

Last season, he played in 11 games and caught for 66 yards, a 16.5-yard average.
