Questions Raised for Defense

The Gamecocks were back at it again on Thursday over at the Bluff Road practice fields bright and early. There’s only two weeks that stand between the Gamecocks and the 2014 season, but according the defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, it will be a couple of days before the team starts preparing for the Aggies.

“We’ll start 10 days out, so Monday will be the day that we’ll start practicing for Texas A&M,” said Ward. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward spoke after practice on Thursday regarding the team’s preparation for the first game of the season.

Reality will set in on Monday, as 10-days reflect on just how short of a time there is between game-day at Williams-Brice.

A question raised to everyone’s mind is who exactly the Gamecock defense will face. The Aggies have a big hole to fill, after the departure of Johnny Manziel to the NFL.

At SEC Media days, head coach Kevin Sumlin quickly noted the fact he did not have a QB picked out before the season.

“I think offensively I didn’t come here today to tell you who the quarterback was going to be, so we can eliminate those questions. That will play itself out,” Sumlin said.

With only two weeks left before the big game, there are two quarterbacks in mind to make a debut.

-Kyle Allen:Phil Steele names this Aggie to start in his 2014 Projected Line-Up. This freshman threw for 8,000 yards and 86 touchdowns in high school.
-Kenny Hill: This sophomore earned playing time in four games of the 2013 season. He stands behind Allen in the Phil Steele Line-Up.

“Both are athletic quarterbacks. We’ve got to prepare for both of them. We have to be conscious of who is in the game and what he’s capable of doing. But we’ve got to do what we do best on defense. That’s the key. We’ve got to make sure we’re taking care of our assignment and make the proper call to get them in the right position to execute their assignment,”noted Ward.

As far as how practice went for the Gamecocks defense on Thursday, Ward says they’re picking up.

“I think (the defense) is close. I think we’ve gotten better. We had one of our better practices yesterday than we did this morning, but that goes a little bit to the offense, too. I think they picked it up and we didn’t totally respond like I would like us to, but we didn’t do bad. We’re getting better.“

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Friday morning at 10 a.m. All practices are closed.
