09/14/03 USC Football Notes and Quotes

Leftovers from Saturday's 31-7 loss at #8 Georgia: USC head coach Lou Holtz said Sunday that Georgia "played extremely well ... they threw and caught the ball well. We had too many turnovers and penalties. The penalties really hurt us and came at inopportune times." Coach Holtz said that defensively, linebacker Jeremiah Garrison and end George Gause played well, along with cornerback Dunta Robinson. "We weren't able to put enough pressure on their passer," said Holtz ...

"Defensively, we need to play better as a team. I think they converted seven times on third down when they needed at least eight yards each time." Offensively, he was encouraged with the play of the receivers. "They caught the ball like they have been in practice," Holtz said. On the long run by Georgia in the opening drive: "We had two missed assignments and two missed tackles on that one."

* Injury update: S Jamacia Jackson (stinger in his shoulder); S Rod Wilson (bruised ribs, will be x-rayed on Monday).

* Coach Holtz said that the staff would re-evaluate the quarterback position Sunday evening and Monday. "We're not accurate enough in our passing game," said Holtz. "We're going to have to take a long look at it. Bennett Swygert did a nice job at the end. Blake Mitchell is a true freshman that we may have to look at. He runs the scout team well; he's accurate and I like his poise and demeanor. We'll have to wait and see."

* USC returns home to host the University of Alabama-Birmingham this Saturday, Sept. 20. Kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium is 7 p.m. (no live television).
