09/28/03 USC Football Notes and Quotes

Columbia, S.C. - * Leftovers from the Tennessee game: Tailback Demetris Summers rushed for 158 yards on 27 carries against #8 Tennessee. Summers becomes the first USC freshman since Thomas Dendy in 1982 to rush for 100 or more yards in consecutive games. The rookie from Lexington, S.C., also becomes the first Gamecock to go over the 100-yard mark rushing in back-to-back games since Derek Watson had three straight 100-yard plus games in 2000 ...

On UT's game-winning touchdown pass in overtime: "It was a well-thrown ball and an excellent play by their receiver," said USC head coach Lou Holtz.

"Dunta Robinson was trying to make sure they didn't throw the slant pass. The play that bothered me the most was the 10-yard run by (Cedric) Houston a few plays before that. We had a missed assignment on that play ... we would have liked to have had that play back." (on the disappointment of the 23-20 overtime loss): "You put so much into it and come up short. You learn from it, you try to benefit from it and you move on," said Holtz. (on UT's punter, Dustin Colquitt): "Their punter was unbelievable," said Holtz. "He changed field position all night long. In my entire coaching career, I don't think I've seen a punter change the game like he did." (on the play of USC tailback Demetris Summers): "Demetris ran extremely well. The line blocked well for him. He got beat up as the game went along. I thought he did one heck of a job. He has excellent vision," said Holtz. (on UT's defense calling out signals): "They were moving their entire defense. Normally, when a defense calls out signals, it is something like 'move or shift' ... not 'hit' which is what our offense cadence call is. Some of our players claim that was happening. All I know is that our right guard and right tackle jumped at the same time," said Holtz.

Injury report: DE George Gause (right knee sprain), will have an MRI performed late Sunday afternoon; TB Demetris Summers (groin strain); RB Daccus Turman (upper back strain). Summers and Turman will just do conditioning on Monday.
