Sunday - USC Football Notes and Quotes

Columbia, S.C. - Injury update from the LSU game: CB Dunta Robinson (bruised tailbone); DE Moe Thompson (ankle sprain); S Rodriques Wilson (ankle sprain) ... all will be re-evaluated on Monday ... OT Travelle Wharton (ankle sprain) had soreness in his ankle after playing against LSU; S Jamacia Jackson (low back strain), DE George Gause (knee sprain); and S Andrea Gause (shoulder) are all still rehabbing and trying to get back for the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 25 ...

Comments from head coach Lou Holtz: "After looking at the film, we just got beat physically up front on defense. Our secondary played pretty well. Their two great receivers (Clayton and Henderson) had just five catches for 42 yards ... Dondrial Pinkins played well and showed a lot of courage. Our offensive line played pretty well, especially Travelle Wharton, Chris White and Na'Shan Goddard. We just never could establish a running game. I don't know if we could have blocked them or not ... When the game got to 19-7, I thought we might make a few things happen, then they picked up the fumble and ran it in. That was a close call. It could have gone either way ... We don't have very many options left regarding our defensive front. We just have to get better there. We play a team defense. It only works when all 11 are playing together. Sometimes individuals want to make plays and the team breaks down. They hurt us with the back coming out of the backfield in the passing game and on the bootleg. They had four third down plays that hurt us, and two of them the quarterback ran the ball. We made too many critical mistakes at critical times ... I've coached teams that have controlled the ball as long as they (LSU) did, but I don't think I've had it controlled that long against one of my teams. Whichever team can run the football is going to win the time of possession."
