Thursday - USC Football Practice Report

Columbia, S.C. - Notes and quotes from USC football camp: Following Thursday's practice, USC head coach Lou Holtz met with the media. Here are some of his comments: "We've had a good week of practice. Today was one of our better Thursday practices. Vanderbilt has played us extremely well. They moved the ball at will against us last year. Corey Jenkins was the difference in last year's game. Vanderbilt is an SEC football team that is improving each week ...

Chris White will start at either center or right guard Saturday against Vanderbilt. He was the starter at right guard last week against LSU ... "We've been solid at offensive tackle, but we haven't been consistent enough at guard or center. You'd like to be able to start the same unit along the offensive line each week, but we haven't. Hopefully, that will help us create some good depth ... Depth is critical in building a championship caliber football team" ... "The most important thing to do after a loss is not to over-react and I don't think we have over-reacted ... " Coach Holtz said that Travelle Wharton (left tackle), Jabari Levey (left guard); and Na'Shan Goddard (right tackle) would start along the offensive line, along with Chris White and/or John Strickland and Jonathan Alston ... Coach Holtz said that George Gause and Moe Thompson would start at defensive end. Gause has missed the past two games with a knee sprain ... Jason Capers has a sore back but is expected to start at defensive tackle ... Jamacia Jackson has returned to practice after missing the LSU game with a back strain. He is expected to play against Vanderbilt ... Said Coach Holtz:: "This is a very important game. It's an SEC game and it's Homecoming. We need to play well and we need to find a way to win." Kickoff Saturday is 7 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium.
