Tuesday - USC Football Notes and Quotes

USC's football team went through a physical two-hour, 15 minute practice on Tuesday, as the Gamecocks continued preparations for this Saturday's SEC showdown against #15 Florida at Williams-Brice Stadium. Kick off is set for 12:30 p.m. with Jefferson Pilot Sports televising the game regionally ...

Comments from Coach Lou Holtz following practice: "We scrimmaged some of the younger players at the end of practice. Ryan Brown, Cody Wells and DeAdrian Coley may have had some of the best hits out there today. I liked the way we practiced. It was physical and that's how it should be ... I'd like to play another quarterback some this week, but we're not getting any consistency from the backup position. We need someone to step up there ... Kenny Irons has had a good week and should play some at tailback. We'll play Cory Boyd, Daccus Turman and Kenny Irons on Saturday. How much success we have moving the football will determine how many people we will play at that position ... We moved Taqiy Muhammad to safety and he may start there. We haven't been getting the kind of play we need at that position. Taqiy was an All-America defensive back in junior college and played corner for us last year. He and Corey Peoples have done some good things at safety this week ... Deandre' Eiland is back at cornerback and Ricardo Hurley is still playing some defensive end. George Gause is looking better (knee injury) and he is starting to look like the George Gause of old."

Muhammad, who had been playing receiver this season, said he was looking forward to getting on the field Saturday. "It's been kind of tough learning the new plays at this stage of the season, but I think Coach Holtz has confidence in me and I don't want to let him down. I just want to get on the field and this may be my best opportunity to do that."

Irons, who has played sparingly since the beginning of the season, said: "I've been competing each and every practice, waiting for my chance. Hopefully, I'll be able to get into the flow Saturday and contribute to the team in a positive way."

Injury report: TB Demetris Summers is out with a concussion; LB Rod Thomas is doubtful with an ankle sprain; DB Rachiem Monroe is doubtful with an ankle sprain.
