Northeast Guilford (NC) fullback Matt Deese is the best fullback in North Carolina, according to his head coach Tommy Pursley.
"I think he is the best fullback in the state, and I've seen many of them since I am a coach on the Shrine Bowl team," says Coach Pursley. "Maryland, South Carolina are recruiting him, and Clemson was on him hard. He is what they call still on the board at NC State and North Carolina, and East Carolina is recruiting him hard."
A heavy load at 5-11, 250 pounds, Deese ran for 1500 yards and 19 touchdowns on the year. However, some schools are not sure what they want to do with him.
"One of the drawbacks is that a lot of the colleges don't play a fullback. If they have a fullback that is an underclassman they don't recruit a fullback. He's really agile, he can spin, cut and runs more like a tailback than a fullback.
"Clemson is not sure what direction they would take with the offense. Early in the year they wanted to go to an I-formation, but then they changed it during the season, and they have not decided what they want to do."
Coach Pursley says that Deese has already visited schools unofficially.
"He went to Maryland with (Terp commit Dennis) Marsh one weekend, to South Carolina with his dad, and to North Carolina with me. The only schools he has an officialy visit with so far is to South Carolina, but I am not sure about a date yet."
