A huge non-conference drawn crowd appeared at Sarge Frye Field today to watch yet another dominating performance by the Yardbirds. While the South Carolina hitters have garnered much of the early season attention, the Gamecocks pitchers have been solid as well ...

South Carolina had four home runs, three in one inning, in a 12-0 victory over UNC-Wilmington Sunday before 4,022 at Sarge Frye Field.

The shutout completed a three-game sweep in which USC outscored the Seahawks, 39-7. USC is 6-0.

Five USC pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and two walks Sunday while limiting UNCW to a meager three hits. Only one Seahawks baserunner advanced as far as third base.

USC starter Matt Campbell earned his first victory of the season in his initial start, allowing all three UNCW hits and striking out nine in 5-2/3 innings.

Four USC relievers retired all nine batters they faced, with six strikeouts and no walks.

USC has three shutouts in the first six games. The team ERA is 1.50. USC has allowed only nine earned runs in 54 innings.

Kevin Mellilo was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBI Sunday. Steven Pearce had a three-run homer and Brendan Winn a two-run homer for USC.

Steve Tolleson and Bryan Triplett had two hits and an RBI each, while Davy Gregg continued his hot hitting against UNCW pitching, going 2-for-3 with a double and single.

On the strength of four homers, the Gamecocks built a 7-0 lead after three innings and coasted from there.

USC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. After consecutive walks to USC's first two batters, Pearce smacked a fastball from UNCW starter Thomas Benton over the leftfield wall for a three-run homer. It was his fifth homer in six games this season.

Powell followed with a double to left-center. He advanced to third on a passed ball with one out but did not score.

UNCW managed to get a runner into scoring position in the 2nd on a walk and stolen base but Campbell struckout the last two batters to get out of the jam.

UNCW reached Campbell for a one-out single in the third before consecutive strikeouts ended the inning. Campbell had six strikeouts through the first three innings.

USC erupted for four runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead. All of the runs came on homers. Triplett led off the inning with a solo homer, his first of the season, to left-center, giving USC a 4-0 lead.

After Landon Powell singled, Brendan Winn launched his third homer to left-center, a two-run shot that gave USC a 6-0 lead.

Kevin Melillo greeted UNCW reliever Will Hunt with a homer to right-center off the scoreboard.

Campbell sailed through the fourth, surrendering only a harmless two-out single, and got out of a jam in the fifth with an inning ending 4-6-3 double play.

USC added a run in the 4th to make it 8-0. Gregg doubled into the right field corner and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored on Tolleson's sharp single up the middle.

USC added another run in the 5th when Melillo singled home Winn, who had walked and moved to second on a wild pitch.

UNCW ran themselves out of an inning in the 6th when, with runners on the corners, the Seahawks attempted a double steal . The move backfired when the runner moving toward second was gunned down by Powell.

Melillo walked on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run in the bottom of the sixth, giving USC a 10-0 lead.

USC's Jason Fletcher worked a perfect 7th before giving way to Cliff Donald in the 8th. Donald retired UNCW in order without much difficulty.

USC scored two runs in the 8th when Winn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and David Cash grounded into a 6-4 forcecout.

Zach Reeves and Chad Blackwell, USC's closer, retired the Seahawks in order in the 9th to close out the victory.
