Gamecocks Fair Much Better This Past Weekend

In baseball South Carolina defeated Vanderbilt 10-4 on Sunday to win the Southeastern Conference baseball series two games to one. The sixth ranked Gamecocks improved to 23-5 overall, 4-5 in the SEC. Vanderbilt, ranked 25th, dropped to 21-7 and is also 4-5 in the conference race. New polls are expected out on Monday and do not be surprised if the Gamecocks were to drop another spot regardless of the series win.

The University of South Carolina women's tennis team survived a 4-3 scare from Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center in Starkville, Ms. The win improved the Gamecocks to 12-7 overall and it evened their record at 5-5 in the SEC while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-12 overall and to 1-9 in conference play.

Riding high from their upset win over No. 3 Ole Miss, the South Carolina men's tennis team continued rolling, taking down No. 31 Mississippi State 5-2 Sunday afternoon. The win marked the Gamecocks second consecutive conference win as the race for seeds in the Southeastern Conference Tournament heats up.

Sophomore catcher Ashley Smith hit two two-run homers to lift No. 18 South Carolina over Kentucky 4-0 and helped USC claim its first conference series win in the Eastern division. The Gamecocks improve to 19-12 overall and 8-10 in the SEC. Stacey Johnson pitched her tenth complete game and her fourth shutout of the season as she allowed seven hits and struck out six.

Competing against a number of post-collegiates, USC's men's and women's track and field teams posted four wins on the women's side and three victories on the men's side. USC will host the South Carolina State Championship on Wednesday, April 7 at Weems Baskin Track and Field.

The University of South Carolina equestrian team had four riders qualify for the Varsity Equestrian Championships, which will be held on April 23-24, in Conyers, Ga. The Gamecocks were in Rome, Ga., this past weekend, at the IHSA Zone 5 Finals. The riders who qualified finished in the top two of their division.
