Gamecocks Set Four Year Mark For NFL Draftees

Lou Holtz and staff continues to put their players in the NFL at a record setting pace ...

As of late Monday afternoon, South Carolina has five of its former football players headed to NFL camps this spring.

Three Gamecocks went in this weekend's draft. Cornerback Dunta Robinson was a first round selection (#10 pick overall) by the Houston Texans. Robinson becomes USC's highest draft pick since Sterling Sharpe was chosen #7 in the 1988 draft.

Offensive lineman Travelle Wharton was a third round pick by the Carolina Panthers, while defensive back Deandre' Eiland was chosen in the sixth round by the Minnesota Vikings.

Signing free agent contracts were tight end Hart Turner with the Miami Dolphins and linebacker Jeremiah Garrison with the San Diego Chargers.

Lou Holtz has placed 13 Gamecocks in the NFL since 2000. He failed to place anyone in his first year, 1999. The previous high was set from 1954-1957 during a 30 round draft. In modern history the Gamecocks sent 13 to the NFL from 1988-1991 but that was during a 12 round NFL draft. Holtz has operated under the modern seven round draft while at USC.
