Gamecocks Near Top With Offensive Lineman

"I like the environment there and the fans they have," said this highly sought after Georgia offensive lineman ...

Ian Smith Profile

I got the impression that Cartersville's Ian Smith was as close to a South Carolina lock as could have been possible the last time I spoke with him. With both parents having graduated from the Columbia campus and with Ian growing up a Gamecock fan, it just seemed like pretty close to a sure thing. That's not the case any longer as Smith names a new Top 5 and a brand new leader.

"I like Georgia, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, and Florida. Georgia is my leader," Ian Smith said.

What has bolted the Dawgs to the forefront?

"I think that I just prefer to stay close to home. Coach Bobo is real nice and he feels like family. They are recruiting me pretty hard as well."

What stands out about the other teams on his list?

South Carolina: "I like the environment there and the fans they have."
Auburn: "I haven't had a chance to get there but I drove through it once and I liked it a lot."
Alabama: "Basically the same thing as Auburn. I drove through there and liked the area."
Florida: "They have always had a good team as long as I can remember."

Ian picked up his first scholarship offer a week ago.

"Florida offered me last week. I was pretty excited about it."

What is the Purple Hurricane star looking for most in a school?

"I'm looking at the coaches and the environment. I want a place with good fans and good people."

Smith will attend camps at Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina this summer.
