USC Beats Miami - Advances To Bracket Finals

Cliff Donald allowed it to become interesting in the end, but the Gamecocks were not to be denied as they advancd to their second bracket finals in three years while ironically picking up their 2001st win in the program ...

Brendan Winn scored five times to tie a college world series record and also drove in three runs, and Bryan Triplett had four hits as the University of South Carolina Gamecocks eliminated the Miami Hurricanes to advance to the bracket finals in Omaha to face Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night at 7:00 pm on ESPN2.

Designated hitter Nick Gardiner also drove in three runs while Steve Pearce, Winn and Steven Tolleson each had round trippers helping SC to tag the Canes with 15 runs in a contest that was never really in question.

South Carolina (51-16) never trailed and led at times, 12-zero and 13-2 before ending it 15-11 and sending Miami packing back to south Florida.

With the victory, The Gamecocks became the first team since LSU in 1991 to score 15 or more runs in two or more consecutive CWS games.

Miami on the other hand, lost two consecutive games for the first time this season despite out-hitting the Cocks 17-16 ... most of those hits coming in the late innings against USC's reliever.

South Carolina starter Billy Buckner (7-2) was en fuego Tuesday night from his first pitch on, as he scattered 9 hits while striking out 10 in only seven innings. Buckner's only major hiccup was when Jon Jay hit a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Canes a glimmer of hope that made the score 12-3. Cliff Donald relieved Buckner and the game quickly became interesting as Miami fought back to trail 15-10 before Donald was lifted for Zac McCamie. By the time Donald was pulled he had given up 7 runs on 8 hits.

South Carolina now needs to defeat Cal State Fullerton two times in a row, beginning Wednesday night, in order to reach the championship round of the CWS beginning Saturday.

Texas and fellow SEC eastern division member Georgia, face-off today for their bracket's rights to advance to the Championship Series. Georgia must defeat tourney favorite twice in order to advance.
