An Interview With Lance Laury

Lance Laury lets us in on the position move and a few other little inside tidbits about the new Defensive Coordinator ...

Lance Laury

Which linebacker spot will you be playing this year?

"I'll be at Apache Linebacker this season. Just think of it like a Spur."

What are your goals for the season?

"Just to do whatever it takes. To stay positive and upbeat. To stay together as a team. When you speak about goals with us this year you are asking about team goals because we're all thinking in terms of what it will take for the team to succeed. So the simple answer is that my goals are to do whatever it takes to help the team win this year. We were not happy with last season. Coach (Lou) reminded us this morning that we are only as good as our last game. Well, everybody knows what happened in our last game so we have a lot of work to do to be where we want to be."

This is your junior year right?

"Yes Sir. Right, but sometimes it feels like longer. What I mean by that is that I am comfortable being here. I know what to expect now. It feels like I have been doing this for a long time now and that makes it easier on me - knowing what to expect and all. I feel real good about this season for some reason, don't ask me why. I just have a good feeling about this season coming up and all."

Are you healthy?

"Oh yes sir. I mean we worked hard all summer. We ran like thirty 40s all summer and I felt good doing that. My knee didn't bother me or nothing so I feel good about that."

Your defensive coordinator is also your position coach. How is that working out?

"Well, it was that way last season too so that's no big change really there. But as far as Coach (Rick) Minter is concerned I like him a lot. He's a pretty cool guy - ya know ... he talks a lot when it's just us. He's very inspiring - he's real fired up. When it's just us he is not as laid back as he is around the others. He likes to talk to us to get us fired up and he is real good at it. I mean the way he presents things is real good. There is something about him that you gotta like if you are playing for him. He's real knowledgeable ya know ... he knows his stuff and we're learning from him. I like him a lot I really do, but I gotta play better for him to like me that much." ::: laughs :::

Have you bought into his defense?

"Oh yeah, absolutely. I mean he is going to sort of turn us loose out there this year and let us get after it for a change. Yeah, absolutely. Sort of turn up the heat and let us make plays. His defense is solid."

Let's finish up by you giving us your true height and weight.

"I'm exactly six-two and a half and I weigh about 238 most of the time. It just depends on the time of day."
