South Carolina Football Practice Report

Columbia, S.C. - The South Carolina Gamecocks worked out in shorts and no pads Thursday afternoon, as the hot, muggy weather returned to Columbia. USC will play host to #3 Georgia this Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. Kickoff for the nationally televised game (ESPN with Dave Barnett, Bill Curry, David Norrie and Alex Flanagan) is set for 5:36 p.m. The game is sold out ...

* Injury update: OL Kris Mick (out) with a wrist injury; OL Seth Edwards (out) with an ankle sprain.

* Following Thursday's workout, head coach Lou Holtz met with the media. Here are some of his comments: "We were out on the field longer than I would have liked for us to be, but I felt like we needed to work on some things and get some things corrected. Just about everyone is available to play. The attitude has been great. The team has had good focus and preparation. There is a big-game atmosphere surrounding things. We plan on playing well. If that is going to be good enough, we just don't know. On the short field goals, we'll use Thomas Hooper (true freshman). On the longer field goals we'll use Charlie Carpenter (redshirt sophomore). Josh Brown will do the punting, Joey Bowers will kick off and either he or Mike Rathe will hold. I have liked the way Hooper has kicked the ball this week. I like the speed in which he kicks. He hasn't been as consistent as I would have liked for him to be in team, but hopefully, that will come with experience. Carpenter has kicked pretty well this week. I'm anxious to see how we will handle adversity; how we react when something bad happens will go a long way in determining the make up of this football team."

* The television crews from ESPN and ESPN's Game Day arrived Thursday. They did a walk through at Williams-Brice Stadium to check camera locations and finalize their production plans. Game Day, featuring Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Rocket Ishmael, will have a segment Friday afternoon from the State Fairgrounds and then on Saturday, will host their live show beginning at 10:30 a.m. Coach Holtz will make a guest appearance on the set at 11:25 a.m. Coach Holtz joked that Rocket, who was an All-America receiver for him at Notre Dame, still has a year of eligibility remaining and he plans to see if he can exercise it this weekend against Georgia.

* Going back to USC's freshman kicker, Thomas Hooper. The diminutive rookie is from Montgomery, Ala., and will be making his college debut this Saturday against Georgia. Hooper, who was an invited walk on, kicked in red shoes for the first 10 days or so of practice, before settling on the more traditional black cleats.

* There will be a special tribute to "9-11" at Saturday's game. Four firefighters from New York City will be honored during pregame. These firefighters are from a unit in the City that lost many lives during the terrorist attack three years ago. At halftime, the USC and UGA bands will put on a combined patriotic performance.

* Gamecock fans can gather in front of the Colonial Center Friday at 7 p.m. for a "Beat Georgia" pep rally. Country music recording artist Tim McGraw is performing that evening at the Colonial Center.

* Tim Frisby, USC's 39-year-old walk on receiver who spent 20 years in the U.S. Army, will dress Saturday. Frisby has been nicknamed "Pops" by his teammates. Coach Holtz says Frisby reminds him of former comedian Jack Benny, who always joked he was 39.
