South Carolina Football Practice Report

Columbia, S.C. - The South Carolina Gamecocks worked out in shorts Thursday afternoon as preparations continued for their game against the Troy Trojans this Saturday, Sept. 25 at Williams-Brice Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:03 p.m. The game will be televised on a pay-per-view basis in the state of South Carolina and is also available through ESPN's GamePlan package...

* Injury update: TB Demetris Summers (ankle) practiced on a limited basis Thursday and is expected to be available on Saturday. WR Sidney Rice (hyperextended knee) is doubtful. Rice has not practiced this week. DT Darrell Shropshire (dislocated finger) is probable, although he may not start. OL Kris Mick is expected to have surgery on his wrist this Friday. QB Dondrial Pinkins (foot) is expected to play.

* Tim Frisby, a 39-year-old walk-on wide receiver, received good news Thursday afternoon when he was informed that the NCAA had declared him eligible for intercollegiate athletic competition. Frisby, a 20-year veteran of the United States Army, graduated from high school in Allentown, Pa., long before the current NCAA admission standards were in place. The NCAA membership services ruled on USC's request for Frisby's eligibility on Thursday. Coach Holtz announced it to the team prior to the practice and there was a good round of applause. Frisby will dress out for Saturday's game.

* Following Thursday's workout, head coach Lou Holtz met with the media. Here are some of his comments: "We weren't as sharp as we needed to be today. I didn't think we threw or caught the ball like we need to. Dondrial Pinkins will probably start at quarterback, but you'll see Syvelle Newton early in the game. This hasn't been an emotional week, but the focus in practice from Tuesday on has been pretty good. Troy has a very good team. They present a lot of challenges for us ... We're all here for the same purpose ... and that's to win. It doesn't matter who the starter at quarterback is. It really doesn't. What does matter is who moves the team down the field and gets the ball in the end zone. That's what matters the most. I'm glad we have both quarterbacks. We need both of them ... Demetris Summers ran much better today. I think he will be able to play on Saturday -- how much, I don't know. We'll probably start Gonzie Gray and Cory Boyd at the running backs ... Darrell Shropshire is available to play, but I would think that Jason Capers and Preston Thorne will start at defensive tackles. You'll see more of Marque Hall and Stanley Doughty there ... I think you'll also see more of Chris Tucker at guard. We moved Freddy Saint-Preux to guard last week. Hopefully, by next week he can help us some there ... I'm happy for Tim Frisby. He has an unbelievable story. Even when we weren't able to invite him back to report at the beginning of preseason camp, he wrote me the nicest letter about our team. He just wants to do what he can to help the team. That's all. His desire is incredible. I believe at some point, he will play this year."

* Here are some comments from Tim Frisby: "I ws thrilled when I received the news regarding my eligibility. I want to thank our NCAA Compliance Office and the NCAA for the expeditious manner in which they carried this out. I'll play whatever role they need me to play. It's all about the team. If Coach would ever call on me, I plan on being ready."

* It will be Parents' Weekend on the USC campus. The game is a sellout.
