Gamecocks Defeat USC Upstate 81-63

Columbia, S.C. - The University of South Carolina men's basketball team tipped off the season on Monday night in an 81-63 exhibition win against USC Upstate. The Gamecocks jumped out to an early lead 11-3 lead but Upstate would cut it down to two at 13-11 with 12:03 remaining in the first half but that would be as close as they would get as the Gamecocks ended the half on a 35-20 run to take a 48-31 lead into the half. In the final stanza, USC outscored Upstate 33-32 to take a 81-63 win.

Carolina used fast break points to key the way as they outscored Upstate 21-0 in that category as well as shooting (24-29) 82.8% from the free throw line. USC was led by Carlos Powell who had 21 points, and eight rebounds. Tarence Kinsey tallied 18 while Josh Gonner totaled 15.
