The humiliating loss is resulting in quotes and headlines such as:
... [Zook's] most lopsided SEC victory in three seasons . . .
... [Leak's] record setting six touchdown passes . . .
... finally a dominating, signature SEC victory . . .
... unfortunately not against Tennessee, Georgia, or LSU
While the translation for Gator fans may well be ‘too little, too late', the translation for Gamecock fans is ‘insult to injury'.
Congratulations to Ron Zook and his Florida team for their determination in the face of what many have considered to be an extremely poor handling of the coaching situation. Were it not for the garnet and black blood strewn across the gridiron, one would be thrilled for the Gators. Given the situation, one can hardly begrudge Coach Zook for running up the score during Florida's Homecoming, Senior Night and Zook's final appearance in The Swamp. It was a dear price for the Gamecock's to pay.
There is bound to be more fuel thrown onto the coaching fire/rumor/speculation/gossip at USC. Precious little appeared to click for the Gamecocks on Saturday night. The kicking game was dismal and continually placed Florida in excellent field position. Chris Leak moved the ball at will against the defense. And the offense never got it together. There will be complaints against the officiating, and rightfully so. There will be questions surrounding injured players and their impact on the game. There will be play calls scrutinized and criticized. Unfortunately, there are always problems with officiating. No team has escaped the inevitable bad call. And at this point in the season, there is not a team anywhere that isn't playing without injuries. We are left with the understanding that this loss will join the list of other games where we simply got out coached.
Only time will tell what direction the fans' attitude will take on the situation. More and more fans may demand a coaching change. While some have advocated a passing of responsibilities between Coach Holtz and Skip, that may well change given the offensive play calling Saturday night. Odds are, there will be an increased clamoring for Steve Spurrier to take the helm. And there will be a few that will remain loyal unto death for Coach Lou Holtz.
Clemson's own humiliation against Duke will inevitably become a factor in their attitude during next week's game. The Gamecocks stand between them and post-season play. The only thing left to salvage is State Bragging Rights ~ again. One thing is certain, somehow, someway the Gamecocks of South Carolina, (from the coaches to the players to the fans), must "man-up" and prepare themselves for the final battle of the season.
