Troy Williamson wooed NFL scouts and coaches today with his brilliant showing of quickness and speed. As all eyes were focused on the former Gamecock wideout, Williamson chose not to run the 40 yard dash for the scouts having run a 4.38 forty in the combines. He had excellent times in all the agility drills today and dropped one pass during the entire workout.
George Gause's stock rose significantly today when he, too, posted impressive numbers in the forty and other agility drills.
Joel Segal, who also represents the Atlanta Falcon's Michael Vick, said today of his client Gause, "George posted Will Smith type numbers today. His numbers are better than David Pollack or any other defensive line prospect that I am aware of in the draft. We expect George's stock to rise after today's results."
In other news:
Coach Spurrier announced David Smith was released from the team today.
Syvelle Newton is now the number one split-end. Newton can be expected to be shifted into shotgun quarterback from time to time. Noah Whiteside will be the starter on the other side. Travis Lee and Michael Flint will also see plenty of snaps at wide receiver. Coach Spurrier said, "A lot of incoming, true freshman will be expected to contribute this season."
Most spring practices will be open to the public begining this Saturday at 11:00 am. Gamecock fans are encouraged to watch the team at Williams-Brice.
The 10:00 am practices are open to credentialled media personnel only.
ESPN2 and ESPNU will be broadcasting the spring game. South Carolina, as far as we know, is the only school to be asked to televise their spring game nationally.
Quarterback Depth Chart (in order):
Mike Rathe - (eligible for practice only)
We hope to have an answer on Mike Rathe's eligibility by Saturday morning.
Practice next week will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Times to be announced.
With regard to David Smith and other players currenlty dismissed, Steve Spurrier said, "They chose not to play for us. It was their decision through their actions."
Forty times on the Gamecock Secondary:
Jonathan Joseph and Mike West ran 4.3 forties while Fred Bennett and KO Simpson posted 4.4 in the forties.
DeAdrian Coley (DeeCee) may be the most athletic player on the team. He ran a 4.58 forty and benches over 400 pounds. Defensive coaches have decided to just line him up and turn him loose.
Depth Chart Backfield:
Cory Boyd is the number one running back followed by Albert Ashcraft. Daccus Turman will be the leading fullback followed by Anthony (Pooh) Lamar.
There will be banners hung in the stadium honoring the 1969 ACC Championship football team, the all-time great Gamecock players such as George Rodgers, Sterling Sharpe and others. The late Coach Joe Morrison will also be honored.
Coach Spurrier has asked for a nickname for Williams-Brice stadium. Russ Perry suggested The Cock Pit. Spurrier indicated he would run the suggestion past Dr. Sorenson to see what he has to say about it.
There will be much more information on the Rooster Report to be posted within the next 24 hours. He is waiting on more news on Rathe and some other things that are developing.
