Dave Odom finally got his big man.
Three star Center Mitchell Carter (click here for more info) (7-0 275) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, committed to the Gamecocks over the weekend while on his official visit in Columbia.
"They have an awesome coaching staff and players," Carter said. "They stress academics. They were really focused on grades and education."
Carter, who was measured and weighed on his visit, brings the Gamecocks the first true, wide body center of the Dave Odom Era.
Dave Telep of Scout.com says, "He's not an impact guy for them (South Carolina), big body though ..."
"He takes up a lot of space in the middle," said his AAU coach Marty McGlothan who accompanied Carter on the trip. "He has a great hook shot and great moves for a big man. He has great hands and good quickness."
Carter averaged 10 points and 11 rebounds per game last season. And he looks forward to helping the Gamecocks next season.
"I'm just going to go there and do my best and try my hardest," Carter said. "Everytime I step on the court I'm going to go hard." Carter also had offers from Wisconsin Green Bay, Iowa and Marquette.
Dave Odom should be able to develop this prospect into a major player within a couple of years.
