Everybody Even

Lake City (S.C.) linebacker Scotty Cooper is quickly becoming one of the top linebacker prospects in the nation. The 6'1, 200 lb. defensive star racked up 96 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks in his junior season on his way to earning All-Region honors. College coaches around the country have taken notice, and Cooper has accumulated an extremely impressive list of offers.

"So far I have offers from South Carolina, Clemson, NC State, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU, and Maryland."

Cooper had previously named the Clemson Tigers as the frontrunners for his signature, but that has changed in recent weeks.

"I would probably say that I don't have a favorite right now. I will probably have a list (of top five schools) made sometime by the end of the summer."

Cooper, who runs a 4.5 forty yard dash, was asked to comment on the two in-state schools that are competing for his services.

"First of all, both of them are close to home. You can play for a Division I school and still be close to home. The thing I like about South Carolina is it's brand new with Steve Spurrier, and if you go there you've got a chance to make an impact and play with a lot of good players. Anybody would want to play for Coach Spurrier, and Columbia is like only an hour and fifteen minutes away from home… Clemson is about the same thing. I went up there to play, and it's a big school, it's close to home, and they have great facilities. They both (South Carolina and Clemson) put out NFL players, so why not stay home and play for an in-state school."

He is currently enjoying the recruiting process and plans on attending a couple of camps, as well as taking several unofficial visits this summer.

"I'm planning on attending South Carolina's one day camp on June 10, and I'm planning on going to Clemson's one day camp. In a couple of weeks, I'm going to be taking trips to schools like West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Penn State, LSU, and Tennessee. Those are a couple of schools I want to get a look at before I make my top five list."

The talented linebacker had originally thought about making a commitment to his school of choice this summer, but he has recently decided to slow the recruiting process down.

"I was going to do it by the summer, but I kind of stepped back and slowed down. I'll probably take it all the way into the fall and take my visits."

Finally, the Lake City High School standout named several goals that he would like to accomplish during his senior season.

"First of all, I'd like my team to win ten ball games, make the state playoffs, and play for the state championship. For my individual goals, I'd want to go to the Army All-American game and play in the Shrine Bowl. I had almost a hundred tackles last year, and I'd probably want thirty more tackles (this year). I'd probably want to catch at least two or three interceptions. I also want to return at least five kickoffs. I think I have the ability to do that. I just want to be with my team, try to get to the state championship, and leave school like that on a good note."
