Gary Gray: Gamecocks Lead

Richland Northeast (Columbia, SC) cornerback Gary Gray is considered by many recruiting analysts to be one of the top cornerback prospects in the nation this year, and currently has him rated as the 6th best corner in America. Gray, who originally committed to South Carolina back in March, recently decided to open up his recruitment between South Carolina and Notre Dame.

The 4-star prospect explained his decision in a recent interview with

Gary Gray, who measures in at 5'11, 170 pounds, said that having second thoughts about his early commitment led him to take a visit to Notre Dame on July 14 and then open up his recruitment shortly after that.

"We went up to Notre Dame and my mom really enjoyed it, so I just wanted to make sure that I made the right decision on where I was going."

After Gray returned from his visit to South Bend, the South Carolina coaching staff invited he and his family to the USC campus to talk things over. According to Gray, the visit went well, and he enjoyed talking with Coach Spurrier.

"It went good. Coach Spurrier had a sheet of paper with USC and Notre Dame on it, and he had a column of facilities, coaches, and different categories. He just broke down the positives and negatives of going to both places."

Gray, who has warranted offers from several of the top programs in the nation, was asked to comment on what he liked about each of his two finalists.

South Carolina - "They are up and coming. Coach Spurrier is a great coach ,and they (South Carolina) have great promise. Their coaching staff is good too. It's home. It's right down the road."

Notre Dame - "The academic part of it is incredible. They graduate 99% of their players, and their facilities are top of the line. They have a good coaching staff. Coach Weiss is a good coach."

Gray, who also plays quarterback for Richland Northeast, has built solid relationships with Quintin Richardson and Brian Maddox, both Gamecock commitments, and he said that the recent turn of events hasn't affected them in the least.

"It really doesn't affect it. Me and Quintin are still boys, and we're actually going up to see Brian Maddox this weekend. You know, we're still friends. "

The talented cornerback has scheduled a pair of official visits to his two finalists. He will visit South Carolina on September 9 for their showdown with Georgia, and he will then visit Notre Dame for their contest against Michigan the following week. Gray says that he already has a timeframe in mind to announce a final decision.

"Sometime after my official visits. After the Notre Dame game against Michigan on September 16, I'll make one (a decision) shortly after that. "

Despite the recent turn of events, Gray still claims South Carolina as his clear favorite.

"South Carolina is the leader right now."
