Matthews Talks About Trip To Columbia

Cheraw (SC) standout defensive end Cliff Matthews is one of the top overall prospects in the Palmetto State this year, and after considering making an early decision, Matthews has now decided to slow the recruiting process down and take several visits to his favorite schools.

After visiting Georgia for their season opener against Western Kentucky, Matthews next stop was in Columbia, SC to see the home state Gamecocks play host to one of his other favorites, the Georgia Bulldogs.

"I had a good time while I was there. It was my first time at a Carolina game."

Matthews, who measures in at 6'5 and 230 pounds, stated that he enjoyed the game, but that he was not pulling for one particular team.

"I just enjoyed it. I really wasn't pulling for one team over the other."

The pass rushing specialist said that he enjoyed talking with several of the other prospects that were in attendance at the South Carolina/Georgia game on Saturday evening.

"I talked with Quintin Richardson, Travian Robertson, Gary (Gray), and Mark Barnes at the game."

As is often the case in the world of recruiting, rumors began to swirl after the game that Matthews had dropped by the Georgia locker room to talk with the Bulldog coaches and players. However, when asked if there was any truth to that rumor, Matthews quickly shot that notion down.

"No, that's not true."

Matthews, who is rated by as the #21 defensive end in the country, is looking forward to taking a couple more visits in the near future.

"I'm planning on taking an official visit to Georgia on October 7 when they play Tennessee, and I'm going to Clemson when they play North Carolina."

Matthews recently dropped North Carolina from his list of favorites, and he is once again focused on Georgia, Clemson, and South Carolina. When asked to share what he likes about each of his three finalists, Matthews gave the following response.

Georgia - "Coach Richt doesn't just care about you as an athlete, but he also cares about you as a student. He wants you to graduate, and he wants you to know that life is not all about football."

Clemson - "I like Coach Bowden and the coaching staff. I like the fan support, because I had a real good time when I went to Clemson versus the Miami Hurricanes (in 2005). I don't think I've been to a game since then that matched the intensity of the crowd."

South Carolina - "It's closer to home. They've got a great head coach, and the fan support is great."

However, fans should not expect a decision from Matthews anytime soon, as he is planning on taking his official visits before announcing his final choice.

"I'll decide after I take my official visits."

Matthews, who totaled 66 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 interceptions as a junior, shared how his senior season is going thus far.

"Well, it's going good. Right now I've got 34 tackles and 12 sacks. We're definitely going to make some noise in the playoffs. We're still getting better now."
