5-star Wide Receiver Names Favorite

Pearl River (Miami, FL) star wide receiver Demetrius Byrd is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the country this year, and the 5-star rated JUCO prospect brings an uncanny combination of size, speed, and athleticism to the gridiron.

The 6'2, 200 pound Byrd consistently runs a sub 4.4 forty yard dash, and with such a special combination of talents, it's no surprise that several top football programs have extended offers to the elite Sunshine State prospect.

"Tennessee, South Carolina, Iowa State, Arkansas, Kansas State, Ole Miss, South Florida, have offered me and LSU came in and talked to me Friday."

While multiple teams are vying for Byrd's services, one team that recently jumped in the mix currently stands at the top of his list.

"I'm leaning towards LSU now, really. They just came in and told me that they're interested in me, so I don't know if that's called an offer or not."

While Byrd claims the Bayou Bengals as his current favorite, four other schools are still very much in the mix with the talented wide receiver.

"Kansas State, Iowa State, Tennessee, and South Carolina are still up there."

Byrd, who will be a May graduate from Pearl River, stated what he likes about each of his top schools.

"All of them throw the ball, and all of them are losing some top receivers, so they need somebody to come in and pick the load up."

Byrd is being recruited by Robert Gillespie for South Carolina, and the Gamecocks have expressed to him their need for speed at the wide receiver position in this recruiting class.

"They said they need speed. They need a vertical guy who can go up and down the sidelines."

When asked to describe his strengths as a player, Byrd stated that he can be counted on in the clutch.

"I bring you a go-to-guy. I'm a guy that has hands, speed, and can block. I'm the guy you can go to and count on to make that big play for you."

Last season Byrd totaled 40 receptions for 700 yards and 7 touchdowns, and he is off to another solid start in 2006.

"I'm doing all right. Right now I've got 18 catches for 300 yards and 2 touchdowns."
