Gamecocks Set To Host Six

The recruiting momentum continues to roll for Steve Spurrier and staff, as USC landed commitments from standout linebacker Melvin Ingram and tailback Eric Baker last weekend, before securing the verbal pledge of highly touted quarterback Stephen Garcia on Thursday afternoon. The Gamecocks will look to continue the good fortune this weekend, as they will play host to six official visitors.

The list of visitors is headlined by the newly committed Stephen Garcia, who announced his intentions on Thursday to graduate early and enroll at South Carolina for the spring semester. The 6'3, 220 pound Garcia, who is rated a 4-star prospect by Scout.com, has visited the USC campus unofficially on a few occasions, but he elected to make his official visit this weekend, before enrolling in January.

Garcia will be joined by fellow Sunshine State prospects Akeem Auguste and Mat Williams this weekend. Auguste, who is rated a 4-star cornerback by Scout.com, enters into the visit claiming a top four of South Carolina, Florida State, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia. Auguste has maintained the Gamecocks as one of his favorites throughout the recruiting process, but this will be his first trip to Columbia. USC will have their opportunity to impress the elite cornerback prospect while on campus, and potentially move up his list of favorites.

Williams, who is a sleeper tight end prospect from Fort Meyers (FL), has seen his stock rise in recent months, and he now has offers from South Carolina, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Wake Forest, and South Florida. The 6'4, 220 pound Williams does not claim any favorites entering into the visit, but the Gamecocks are thought to be in good position with the talented pass-catcher. Williams visited Columbia unofficially earlier this year, and if all goes well this weekend, a commitment is not out of the question.

Hunter-Kinard-Tyler (Neeses, SC) 3-star defensive tackle William Brimfield, who previously committed to North Carolina, has reopened his recruitment since the coaching changes at UNC. The 6'5, 290 pound Brimfield enters this weekend admittedly open in regards to favorites, but South Carolina, North Carolina, NC State, and Tennessee are showing the most interest in the Palmetto State lineman. Brimfield, who visited USC unofficially for the Middle Tennessee State game, has remained low key since reopening his recruitment, but the Gamecocks will have their opportunity to roll out the red carpet for him this weekend. Brimfield still has visits scheduled to both Tennessee and North Carolina in January.

Carver (Winston Salem, NC) 3-star safety Alonzo Winfield was originally scheduled to visit USC last weekend, but after a schedule conflict, he rescheduled his visit for this weekend. The 6'0, 200 pound Winfield, who could also play outside linebacker at the college level, committed to Tennessee back in June, but he has continued to check out other schools despite being committed to the Volunteers.

The final official visitor of the weekend is Bell Co (Pineville, KY) tight end Brent Slusher. The 6'3, 220 pound Slusher committed to Auburn back in July, but his Gamecock recruiter, Fred Chatham, has continued working him to give USC a second look. The Gamecocks would like to sign a couple of tight ends in this class, and while Slusher is considered a long shot, he would be a quality pick up if USC could land him.
