Barnes Already Has UNC Game Circled

Independence (Charlotte, NC) standout wide receiver Jason Barnes is one of the premier wide receiver prospects in the Tar Heel State this year, and he is showcasing his skills in the 70th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas this week. GamecockAnthem.com caught up with the USC commitment for an interview after one of the Shrine Bowl workouts. Read inside for full story.

Barnes, who measures in at an athletic 6'4 and 200 pounds, is soaking up the Shrine Bowl experience this week.

"Everything is going good," said Barnes. "Everybody's out here working hard trying to get on the field for the Shrine Bowl game. I‘m having a lot of fun."

Barnes is currently rated as a 2-star prospect by Scout.com, but he hopes to improve his stock while competing against top flight competition throughout the week.

"You know you're out here playing with top notch recruits, so you're going to do extra to do better in front of the scouts. You know if you do something good, you've done it against somebody that's going to college. It's a whole different ball game than regular high school football."

When asked what his goals are for Saturday's game, Barnes replied that he hopes to make the most of his touches.

"I'm going to try to score twice. We don't throw the ball much, so every time they throw me the ball, I'm going to try to break it... 6‘4, 200 (pounds) - that‘s the best kind of frame if you ask me, so I‘m just going to go up and get it whenever they toss it up."

Whenever you have a bunch of high profile athletes playing together, especially ones that plan on going to rival universities, the trash talking is sure to come out in full force.

"Yeah, we've all been talking junk. We were all in a room last night talking junk to Ryan Houston, because he's committed to Chapel Hill. Me and Travian (Robertson) were letting him hear it about Chapel Hill a little bit."

Barnes, who committed to the Gamecocks over the Tar Heels a few weeks ago, says he already has USC's football game in Chapel Hill circled on his calendar for next season.

"Oh yeah, I can't wait for that. Me and Hakeem (Nicks) against each other, that's going to be the best right there. I‘m already counting down."
