4-star Auguste Is a Gamecock

Chaminade (Hollywood, FL) 4-star cornerback Akeem Auguste had favored South Carolina for much of the recruiting process, but he made it official on Friday morning when he committed to the Gamecocks.

The 5'11, 175 pound Auguste, who is considered one of the top cornerback prospects in the southeast, talked about his decision to become a Gamecock

"Yes, I committed to South Carolina today," said Auguste. "It was pretty much the best visit I took, and everybody was like a family there. I made the choice, and I'm a Gamecock."

Coach Mark Guandolo, who coached Auguste at Chaminade Madonna Prep, said it was Auguste's comfort level with the USC coaches and the direction of the program that led Auguste to commit to South Carolina

"It was between them and Wake Forest, and it was very close. Akeem loved both programs, but I think it was more of just his heart feeling and a gut decision," said Guandola. "He thinks South Carolina is a program that's up and coming. He respects Coach (Steve) Spurrier, and he had a really good relationship with Coach (Robert) Gillespie, who recruited him. He felt comfortable there, and he thinks he has a chance to go in and compete for playing time. We're very happy for him."

Guandola believes that South Carolina is getting a special individual both on and off the football field in Auguste.

"He's a great ball player. He's done everything that we've asked him for. He's a cover corner, and we put him on anybody and everybody. He was our return specialist, and he would have played more offense if he could. This year we had him at quarterback, we had him at running back, and he played a little receiver. As you can tell by all the positions he played, he meant a whole lot to our program. He's just a special player. He's a great kid. He has a great attitude and a smile on his face all the time. He's just one of those players that you love being around."

With USC's need for cornerbacks, Guandola has little doubt that his former playmaker will make an immediate impact with the Gamecocks.

"I think he's going to make a huge impact at South Carolina. Not only is he a great cover corner with great athletic skills, but he's very physical also. He hits like a linebacker, and it's hard to find cover corners that are also physical like that. I think those two attributes are going to carry him far, and he's also a very intelligent player. He'll pick up the schemes and learn what he's asked to."

Auguste chose the Gamecocks over offers from Wake Forest, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Nebraska. He becomes USC's 27th commitment in the 2007 recruiting class.
