Important Recruiting Weekend Ahead For USC

With the Gamecocks already having twenty-nine commitments on board in the 2007 recruiting class, they have narrowed their targets down to a list of elite remaining prospects. Three of those uncommitted prospects will be on hand for official visits in Columbia this weekend in what could prove to be one of the most important weekends of the recruiting year. Read inside for full story.

The list of visitors is headlined by Garner (NC) 4-star wide receiver Chris Culliver, who has narrowed his choices down to South Carolina and Florida. After visiting Gainesville last weekend, Culliver, who measures in at an athletic 6'1 and 190 pounds, will now visit USC to see what Coach Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks have to offer. USC is thought to be in good shape leading up to the visit, and if all goes well, Culliver is expected to announce his college choice early next week.

Another premier prospect that will be on hand this weekend is Boyd H. Anderson (Lauderdale Lakes, FL) 4-star linebacker Josh Bynes. The 6'2, 225 pound Bynes, who is rated the #16 strongside linebacker in the nation by, has claimed a top four of Auburn, Iowa, Louisville, and South Carolina for several weeks now. He has already made visits to his other finalists, but USC will have their chance to roll out the red carpet and leave a lasting impression on the elite Sunshine State prospect. One factor working in USC's favor is that they have two of Bynes' fellow South Florida prospects already committed in Dontee Nicholls and Akeem Auguste. Both Nicholls and Auguste are working Bynes for USC, but the standout linebacker has stated that he won't make his final choice known until Signing Day.

The final uncommitted prospect visiting Columbia this weekend is Riverside (Durham, NC) 4-star tight end Weslye Saunders. The 6'5, 270 pound jumbo athlete has narrowed his choices down to a border battle between North Carolina and South Carolina. After visiting Chapel Hill last weekend and getting to know several of the new coaches on staff, Saunders will now turn his attention to the Gamecocks. Saunders will be joined by former Shrine Bowl teammate Jason Barnes and good friend Mark Barnes, who are both USC pledges, on the trip to Columbia. The athletic Tar Heel State prospect won't announce his final decision until a school banquet on February 5th, but he stated in an interview with earlier this week that he hopes to have a good idea of his college destination after making his South Carolina visit.

The three uncommitted prospects will be joined on campus this weekend by four current Gamecock commitments. Cheraw (SC) 5-star defensive end Cliff Matthews, Independence (Charlotte, NC) 3-star wide receiver Jason Barnes, Sumter (SC) 3-star offensive lineman Kyle Nunn, and Scotland (Laurinburg, NC) 2-star defensive end Byron McKnight will all be on campus for their official visits this weekend. A few unofficial visitors, including USC commitments Mark Barnes and Quintin Richardson, are also expected to be on hand this weekend.
