Whitlock Is One To Watch in 2008

Chester (SC) standout cornerback Charles Whitlock is one of the top overall prospects in South Carolina for the class of 2008, and not surprisingly, the future 4-star prospect is already generating interest from several major programs around the country. Where do the Gamecocks stand with this elite in-state prospect? Read inside to find out.

The 5'11, 180 pound Whitlock, who runs a 4.5 second forty yard dash, is already receiving plenty of attention from college recruiters and has several major offers on the table.

"I'm getting a lot of attention," said Whitlock. "Right now I have offers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Marshall, Clemson, and Alabama."

The Palmetto State standout said he claims no early favorites, but he does know what factors he is looking for in a school.

"Where I can win a BCS bowl game, where can I fit in, and the environment."

One factor that could potentially work in South Carolina's favor is that Whitlock is a cousin of former Gamecock cornerback Jon Joseph, who is currently playing for the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. Whitlock admitted that he and Joseph don't talk much, but he said that he does plan to hear what Joseph has to say about the USC program.

"Me and him don't really talk a whole lot, but he said he's going to get with me to talk about (South Carolina)."

Whitlock, who is being recruited by Coach Tyrone Nix for the Gamecocks, is being recruited primarily for his defensive skills, but he put together an impressive junior season on the offensive side of the ball as well.

"(My junior season) went alright for me. I passed for 1,500 yards, 800 hundred yards rushing, and had a total of 26 touchdowns. I split time with another quarterback on offense."

When asked to describe his strengths on the football field, Whitlock, who said he models his game after Michael Vick, gave the following response.

"I'm real quick, and I make good plays on the ball."

Lastly, while Whitlock is currently taking things slow on the recruiting front, he said that he hopes to have a decision made by the end of the summer.

"I'll have a choice at the end of the summer."
