Quick Hits With Tommy Beecher

One of the biggest surprises of the spring thus far has been the solid play of back up quarterback Tommy Beecher. The redshirt sophomore is currently competing against the highly touted Chris Smelley for the #2 quarterback role, and after an impressive showing in Saturday morning's scrimmage, many believe that Beecher now has the inside track to back up incumbent starter Blake Mitchell.

GamecockAnthem.com spoke with Beecher following Saturday's scrimmage, and the young signal caller shared his thoughts on a variety of topics:

Question: How would you say the offense is clicking as a unit so far this spring?

Answer: As usual, the defense did better in the first scrimmage… We're getting more comfortable out there. That's what we're trying to do everyday. With more scrimmages, the offense will come around.

Question: You got to run with the first team offense a little in Saturday's scrimmage. How was the competition out there?

Answer: Yeah, competition is always hard out here with the first string defense, but it's always a challenge, and I'm always looking forward to it.

Question: What are your impressions of new wide receiver Larry Freeman?

Answer: Larry looks great. I'll tell you what, he's a strong, physical receiver out there. He'll be good for us. Losing Sidney (Rice), we need a guy to replace him, and he looks good so far. I like him a lot.

Question: How much would you say Jared Cook has progressed since last season?

Answer: I'll tell you what, he's one of the hardest workers on the team in the weight room and on the field, and it shows. I think he's the second fastest player on the team now, so he's a great target.

Question: Have you set any goals for yourself this spring?

Answer: Well, my goal is to just help the team in any way I can. I'm a holder right now and back up long snapper and then I'm still battling for that number two spot at quarterback.
