Spurrier Competes in Heritage Pro-Am

Hilton Head, SC - What happens when you take one of the greatest college football coaches (who happens to love golf) and a PGA tour pro and put them together on the links? You get a great round of golf.

South Carolina Head football coach Steve Spurrier joined PGA Tour pro and University of Florida graduate Chris DiMarco for a day on the links Wednesday in Hilton Head at Harbour Town. Spurrier and DiMarco's team had a lot fans following them asking for autographs and posing for pictures. But the large crowd didn't seem to faze the coach as he made a long birdie putt.

Many fans had one question on their mind. Shouldn't Spurrier be in Columbia for the Gamecocks' spring practice? "Well you have 15 days, so we took a day off today... and we'll try to practice tomorrow (Thursday) and have the game Saturday," the coach said.

While x's and o's will be in Spurrier's future, Thursday all that was on his mind was avoiding the bunkers.

All in all it wasn't a bad day for team DiMarco. Spurrier said he was very pleased with how the team played, calling their finish a team effort. "We all contributed. I made a couple birdies. About everybody had a couple birdies. Chris DiMarco played beautifully... he had about 8 birdies, so he was something today," Spurrier said.

Team DiMarco shot a 19 under par, and they finished tied for first place. The lead didn't last long. Shortly after Spurrier and Demarco finished up, a team led by pro Chris Couch finished their round eagle, birdie to overtake Spurrier's group.
