Gamecocks Chasing Texas Tight End
Prosper (TX) 3-star tight end Taylor Thompson has exploded onto the recruiting scene ever since showcasing his talents at the Scout.com Dallas combine back in late March. The 6'6", 230 pound Thompson ran a 4.7 second forty yard dash, a 4.33 second shuttle time and boasted a 30-inch vertical leap, while awing scouts with his performance in the one on one drills at that event. Since then, the athletic jumbo athlete has seen his offer list grow to over twenty schools, including tenders from major programs like South Carolina, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Louisville and multiple others.
One of the most recent schools to jump into the mix for Thompson's services is South Carolina, and despite the distance away from home, Thompson is very interested in what the Gamecocks have to offer.
"Coach (Fred) Chatham from South Carolina offered me about a week and a half ago. He said they'd really like me to come up there and be a part of their team," said Thompson. "I know they play big time football, and they have a big stadium. They have a pretty good business school too."
The Gamecocks didn't take long to shoot up Thompson's list of favorites, as he included South Carolina in his most recent top seven.
"I'd say my top schools right now are SMU, Stanford, Colorado State, OSU, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and UCLA."
With a number of far away schools on his list of favorites, Thompson hopes to make quite a few trips this summer so he can learn more about the different programs that are pursuing him.
"I'm going to Vanderbilt sometime between (June) 20th and (July) 3rd because I'm going up to see my cousin in Tennessee. Then I don't have anything planned, but I'm going to try to see Stanford, UCLA and South Carolina."
While on those trips, Thompson said he will look for a few key factors in deciding which school is the right place for him.
"I just want to see what I think of the school, the coaching staff, the facilities and stuff like that. I'm trying to make my decision before the summer is over."
Thompson, who racked up 25 receptions for 404 yards and 1 touchdown as a junior last season, closed by sharing what strengths he brings to the football field.
"I'm a big target, and I have pretty good athleticism. I‘m always a mismatch with the secondary because my size and speed is pretty good."
